The sun'll come out

next week? Maybe? Unfortunately, we're back to our previously scheduled cold & rainy April. =/

But on Saturday I went to the garden store and picked out about $100 worth of flowers. Then I remembered that I only have about 3 sq. ft. of garden space, so I really didn't need that many flowers. Plus, only the most shade-friendly plants will actually grow in my garden, so I put about half the plants back.

Here's what I planted:

Um... the tags are all outside - and it's cold there so... uh... the two plants in the back are shade-loving with white & green varigated leaves and tiny blue flowers. From there I just planted more of what survived from last year - a couple ferns, a couple primroses and some more vinca. I know it still looks sparse, but I'm saving room for impatiens when they come in.

Oh - exciting news! Some of my tulips bloomed!

I didn't get a single daffodil this year - I think the raking just came at a really bad time for them.

And after the garden store I went to Hawthorne St. to shop for a while. I actually walked down to Cool Cottons. At about 30th I decided I was only going to look. By 26th I was thinking... just a little something... a fat quarter maybe. By the time I started up the steps I was thinking. Ok - a yard... but no more than that!! Yeah... then I got inside.

It's only two yards though... so that's not sooo bad. And it's not actually for quilting. They had all these cute little capri pants and it was all sunny outside... how could I resist?

Garden Carnage

I've been taking pictures of my little garden as the bulbs have been popping up. It was so exciting to see them growing more and more every day... it gave me great hope for the return of Spring! I couldn't wait to see them bloom. But now I'm sad. Apparently some landscapers came in (we do *not* have regular landscaping here... the ivy was about to take over the place) and decided that my garden was in need of a good solid raking.

Oh the carnage! Leaves are shredded, buds raked into the ground. Oh the humanity!

Well, a couple of the buds are still standing, and a few of the bulbs hadn't budded yet, so I hoping they'll bounce back. It's just... dude! who rakes bulbs???

Garden update

My little garden is in full bloom, and looking really pretty.

I got pretty lucky with the lighting - check out the angelic looking roses.

That's all... not much else to say, just wanted to show off the flowers.

Can you dig it?

Here is my tiny front garden, complete with compost bin. There are aproximately 700 million worms in this little patch of earth. Or at least that's what it looked like when I was planting the flowers. In the front there's some kind of ground cover that I don't know the name of, there are a couple Primroses that I planted when I first moved in, and then more recently planted Hostas, Impatiens, and a couple of ferns. There's a rose back there too, it's a bit pitiful though, I only get one or two good blooms a year.



Here is one of the Impatiens, a shade lover that should be pretty happy there. I've got to find a few more shade-loving plants to fill in the gaps here & there. If you haven't noticed... the master plan behind my garden is "stuff I hope doesn't die".









And the magic of the flower setting of my camera - makes the tiny flowers on the ground cover look quite spectacular. =)














Here's a close-up of the side garden. Another itty-bitty well shaded plot. You can see that there are Tulips, Daffodils, and a nice Lavendar shrub. There's also a bit of Sage, Savory, Mint (which actually *died* over the winter - didn't know you could kill mint!), and a straggly little Rosemary. I was hoping that would take off, but like the majority of plants I love - it requires sunshine. Some silly thing about photosynthesis I guess. ;)
