I spy with my little eye...

perhaps the lamest I-spy quilt ever.

I'm making it for a friend who's having a baby... but I'm fairly certain that she doesn't actually read my blog. And if she does - well, act surprised anyway. ;)

It was taking forever for me to accumulate character fabrics... doing it by the fat quarters instead of being the obnoxious person who piles up 15 bolts of fabric & asks for 1/8 yard of each. So I decided to use the red fabric as spacer blocks, but this was after I'd decided to do a snow-ball pattern, which makes it a little overwhelmingly red.

That squirrel fabric came from the huge-old bag I got from someone who was destashing, the dolphins are from a pair of PJs my mom made for my nephew, and I picked up the music fabric when I was in Sisters. With the exception of the pink-cat fabric from Sally's quilt, I tried to go with more boy-type fabrics, but nothing is very baby-appropriate. It's just not quite turning out as cool as I'd hoped. But I'm thinking of doing some kind of free motion quilting in the empty squares to make it a little more fun.

Any suggestions?

I love the red and your snowball pattern!! I think it will be really nice. Your idea of free-motion quilting in the empty squares is a good idea. Email me, I have a few other ideas for you! :)

If you ever need more single animals, let me know. I've got a couple boxes of just animal print scraps.

Ok, TOO FUNNY that you mention the obnoxious person that is always in front of you at the cutting counter with 20 bolts of fabric that they want 1/8th yard of every other bolt and 1.2999 yards of the others--so glad I am not the only one that can't stand that--and I don't even quilt!

I think it's looking pretty darn cool. What if you quilted various little figures in the empty squares? Maybe use some cheapy cookie cutters to make yourself some templates to trace on there. Then you could turn the non-pattern fabric squares into a new element of the "I-Spy" theme--each square could be something different. They make cookie cutters of everything now--I've got train ones, and even a llama cookie cutter!

M5K - thanks for the offer, but I can barely justify making this one, I have no reason to make another one anytime soon.

Bezzie & Zonda - thanks for the ideas, I hadn't thought of using cookie cutters - but I have a ton of them and rarely use them - a maple leaf, hearts, and even a sheep!

It's got cherries and flamingos! That makes it way cool. I really need to take up quilting, but I promise not to hold up the line at the fabric store.

I know nothing about quilting, so I can't give you any suggestions as to that aspect. I will say I love the quilt! It will be a great thing when the baby is in the toddler age and I wish I had one for my daughter.

I think that waiting for someone to cut one eighth yards from 20 different bolts business is what started the availability of fat quarters and fat eighths. Maybe. It could be true. ;-) I can't stand waiting for fabric to be cut. I'd rather wait at the DMV, seriously.

I have never seen or heard of this I spy quilt. Yours looks pretty cool not lame. Is the point that each octagon is supposed to be visually diverse and interesting? Well, then you've done your job.

Yeah baby & mom will love it - I love the Christmas squirrel! I hate being the person at the cutting counter with a zillion bolts, even if I'm buying yardage of all of it - if I'm at Hancock's or something the person behind me inevitably is standing there with like a spool of ribbon or something else tiny. Mweh - one advantage of shopping at quilt shops!
